Browser for SL 10.6.8
« on: May 30, 2017, 08:56:14 AM »
Hey all,

Firefox has stopped updating for 10.6.8. Any know of a reliable browser that isn't a memory hog that is still updating for this OS?

Thanks!

That's still updating?  No, sadly.  I tried pretty hard to find one a while back for my older machine and gave up.

I'm in exactly the same situation.   :(

Almost time to toss in the towel, and unhinge my wallet.    :'(

Also worth considering, if you're going to the used market, is that the next hurdle in terms of older OS support is currently 10.10 ... a lot of apps are no longer supporting pre 10.10 thanks to Apple's changes in Xcode which by default will only support 10.10 and higher for new builds.  Some apps still do make binaries for "older" builds, but they have to do it separately and I suspect that they won't do it for very long ... which _really_ hurts the used Mac market, you basically need to have a machine that's no older than 2-3 years otherwise you'll be up against the wall again very very soon.   Web browsers are not too bad for this -- I can still get them for my 10.8.x machine (2009 20" iMac w/ core 2 duo), but again it's not really a great browsing experience.  They even finally EOLed my Mac Pro tower (which doesn't run anything newer than 10.11).  I'm going to baby my current 27" retina iMac for as many years as I can get out of it!

I am still sticking with 10.6.8 on the old MacPro. Keeps AppleWorks and my old version of PhotoShop alive.

FireFox is still doing the trick for most things, but some websites or videos are becoming problematic. I do have a newer MBP running elCap, but must say the touch pad is not what I would call friendly. Works for some, not so well for me.

Will wait and see what Apple does with the Pro line, but I am staying where I am for the immediate future.

Last couple of days any thing Yahoo related has gone bonkers on the older machine. Website entirely kaput as well as their webmail.

A shame as I hang on to a couple of Yahoo Mail accounts because they do such a superb job of filtering out SPAM.

I think they have been having server outages as I had a bunch of bounced email messages coming back to my hosting server for valid yahoo accounts (happened to me personally for a few buddies which is why I looked into it on my server too).

No but this page lists 11.4 (which was probably the last version compatible with 10.6.x)

Those are all windows versions sadly ... I found a few places like that when I was looking as well, but those are all definitely windows .exe files.

Yep seems to be ... I would personally be a bit leary to download and install stuff from a 3rd party site but maybe that's just me ... there's just way too much nasty stuff out there these days (and yes there are indeed nasties for MacOS in the wild).
