This model is marketed toward a higher level at the moment, similar to what Apple has done in the past when producing a new level of machine. A slimmer version will certainly follow that has a few additional options and possibly an upgradable processor, but for the moment this model is targeted for those who have the money and believe they need it. Any new Mac users who come onboard at the moment will be able to get an outstanding deal on all those left over G3's in everyone's warehouses... which is another reason why Apple could not produce a low-end version of this. Who in their right mind would buy an older G3 when they could spend the same amount on a new G4? That would have pissed every single Mac reseller off to the point where they might have even lost a few that they just got back.
I think that Apple did the right thing in the long run. When the PoweBook G3 first came out, it wasn't the exact machine I wanted at the time, but I bought one because I needed it. That computer has served me SO well over the years that I believe I made a good choice, even though I knew I was getting a bit screwed on the price and options at the time. Here we are now with the PBG4 being released at another critical point for me in business where I feel that I need it's advantages now. I cannot wait another 6 months for the next release, so I'll accept a couple of basic annoyances (expansion bay, fixed processor) and pay the premium to get a computer that will solve a number of issues for me, make my job easier, and excite my eldest son to the highest level (he's getting my G3)... in fact, it's costing me LESS than my original G3 did.
Also a few comments on 'comparable' PC laptops. Both times I have decided to purchase a new PowerBook, it has been to replace a Windows-based laptop I received from work (two different jobs). The frustration level of using a cheaply made, poorly designed PC laptop with an OS that gets worse with each release has driven me to buy a Mac PB for the reliability and quality and use Virtual PC to handle the rare things that aren't compatible with the MacOS (such as work-only, specialty apps). Thanks to the PBG4 I can finally quit carrying two laptops around and return this 700 Mhz Dell to corporate with the message "Thanks, but I needed something reliable, so I bought a Mac".
