After the Dust Settles - The PB G4's Shortcomings

Re: How is ignorance treating you these days?                   1:38 AM EST Wed Jan 24, 2001

William:

In response a) yes I have and do fly with a powerbook (wallstreet). A front loading device is _much_ worse than a side loading device. What is going to happen when you eject your dvd with your powerbook drectly in front of you on your tray? Simple answer, you are not, you are going to have to either lift it at an angle or turn it sideways in order to do this, I think you have it quite backwards here.

And for multimedia engineers like you, you could do your job on a portable well before Jan 9 (what do the last gen powerbooks not have that this one does besides a few fancy features thrown to us in a smoke and mirrors show) aside from the given speed/power boost? And even given that announcement date you chose to use as the day when you could start doing your work, that is irrelevant as you will still not be able to do your work on it for months (a point I failed to mention in the article).

Im not saying that this machine is not good, it is great, but I do not believe it lives up to all the hype. Looks aren't everything. It's thinner, faster and has a bigger screen. It also has no expansion bays and a single pcmcia slot. It is a give and take situation. I am just concerned that after the dizzying effect of MacWorld wears off, and when people are _still_ waiting for these machines to arrive on their doorstep the public perception may change for the worse. It won't be the first time this has happened and it may not be the last. Apple is infamous (at least of late) for announing hardware they don't have yet, but what they _will_ have within a couple of months (according to their best estimates of course).
