When The Big Boys Come To Town

Re: Debian's out -- but not for the casual user                   3:11 AM CDT Sat Apr 15, 2000

Debian was always an adventure to configure, no matter what
platform you were running. One can get carried away with it
for sure as well. I find that it reacts just as i would
expect any unix / x-window system to do, except that it
actually has a lot of software working; nevermind that you
can install RPM's if you are careful, and Debian always
seemed to have the best c compiler setup that I have ever
used. Most vanilla c and c++ sources make readily.

Linux in general, and Debian in specific, have always been
hobbyists operating systems. It is true that a properly set
up Debian system could run an office full of terminals and
also act as an internet firewall, database server, and
mail server, while providing an x desktop at the console.
The thing about Debian is that if you install 2000 packages,
you might have to pore over 2000 manpages to figure out how
to run all the software. The sheer bulk of it is incredible.
My Debian system is better than any proprietary workstation
that I have ever seen... Debian Potato is a great release!
